“Old Masters, old Craftsmanship – Painting, Gilding, Framing”

Knowledge of the traditional techniques of craftsmanship is an essential prerequisite for the restoration of centuries old painting and picture frames. In many cases even today work is performed according to the same rules.

The conducted tour is intended to draw the attention of the visitor to inconspicuous technical and artistic details and assist in answering many questions: Is this an old or perhaps even the original frame? Has there been subsequent changes or retouching of the picture? Is the gilding old or new? Is the paint only “yellowed” or “bloomed”? Is the preparatory drawing visible to the naked eye or only by using infra-red technology and how does the technique of Baroque painting differ from that of Renaissance painting?

In our conducted tour we invite the visitor to observe and to discuss these questions and also to examine the harmony between the picture and its frame, for the two should always form an aesthetic unity.

With Tanja Domentat M.A., Art Historian and Sabina Schröter, Restorer for Polychrome Wooden Objects & Gilder.

The Picture and Its Frame – a Brief Introduction to Stylistics (Part 1)

The question what is the right frame for a painting has preoccupied artists and collectors for centuries. Thus there are preferred forms for certain genres such as the oval for a portrait or the diptych and triptych for altar paintings. But the “right” gilding or choice of veneer are also helpful criteria. A gilder and an art historian display selected examples from the 13th – 16th centuries and invite the members of the tour to participate in a discussion of the aesthetics of the picture and its framing.

“Master Craftsman – Gilding and Decoration in Painting and Picture Framing”. In this conducted tour a gilder and an art historian provide insights into the various techniques of decoration and gilding in painting and picture framing. Selected works from the 13th to the 19th centuries are introduced. Particular emphasis is placed on examples which permit examination of the diverse co-existent techniques employed. Is gold a mystic symbol? How, for example, is the “gold brocades” on the saints’ garments produced in the painting of the mediaeval period? What does sgraffito or pastiglia mean? Does the painted composition extend to the frame?
